Rev. Sue Pethoud
In my ministry setting at Cass Community Social Services, I not only interact with clients as a living presence of Christ in their world, but I lead thousands of volunteers each year in service. Our Worship in the Warehouse mid-week worship opportunity gives me the most visibility with our clients. Those interested in attending worship are encouraged to come but are in no way required to be there. My role with them is to make sure they are aware of the opportunity. I am also assigned the task of inviting area clergy to preach a short sermon and to occasionally preach myself. The clients see me in a leadership role there and then interact with me as we see each other during the week. I strive to be a connection for them to the Church and a model of Christ’s love in their world.
I also work diligently in developing relationships between churches, community organizations and individuals that volunteer at Cass. Each year, the agency hosts approximately six thousand volunteers. Though not all are associated with Christian churches, it is my responsibility to model Christ’s love for all as they serve with us. It is important that volunteers are met by a friendly face and made to feel at home, that they are engaged in meaningful tasks, that they understand the population they are serving and how their tasks will benefit the agency and our clients. I interact with potential volunteers on the phone, via email, and in person as I speak to individuals, small groups and entire congregations. In each case, I am the first person they encounter and I must make sure that Christ’s love for them and those we serve is visible and genuine.
Outside of my work with the agency, I sing in the CCUMC choir, facilitate the Trustee and Finance Committees and preach in the absence of the pastor.
